Some allergies are serious and need the consideration of a physician or alternative health care professional. For lighter cases, all of the relief you will need may be provided by home remedies, with comparatively little expense or hassle. These suggested natural remedies for allergies may be found helpful even by those who have terrible allergies and need medication.

Mullein

Mullein is a conventional herbal treatment, and both blossoms and the leaves of the plant are used in herbal medicine. Mullein has expectorant and decongestant properties, that might be helpful for conditions affecting the respiratory tract, including bronchitis and coughing. Mullein tea can also be a powerful method of treating respiratory issues as well as other forms of illnesses including asthma, bronchitis, and allergies. Additionally, it works quickly and efficiently in treating coughs and sore throats.

According to a 2010 article featured on PubMed titled “What’s in a Name? Can Mullein Weed Beat TB where Modern Drugs are Failing” by authors Eibhlin McCarthy and Jim M. O’Mahony of the Cork Institute of Technology in Ireland, “Extracts of the mullein leaf have also been shown in laboratory studies to possess antitumor, antiviral, antifungal, and – most interestingly for the purpose of this paper – antibacterial properties.” Mullein’s antibacterial properties allow it to be successful in treating infections. Mullein has even been used to treat tuberculosis since it is able to inhibit mycobacterium, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.

Fenugreek and thyme

Fenugreek and thyme are used worldwide as medicinal herbs and spices. Fenugreek seeds contain properties which will help treat a broad variety of illnesses like diabetes, high cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases and constipation. Thyme, a member
of the mint family, can be used in the form of oil extract to help treat respiratory ailments and fungal infections. It may also be added to toothpastes and mouthwashes to help prevent oral decay and disease.

While antibiotics in many cases are the initial line of defense in fighting a sinus infection, thyme may help remedy the illnesses, such as sinusitis- an infection of the mucus membranes of the sinuses often accompanied by inflammation of the same region. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 29.3 million adults suffer from diagnosed sinusitis.

Fenugreek is typically used for it’s nutritional support to the respiratory system. This herbal powerhouse contains gelatinous substances, known as mucilaginous compounds which help soothe tissue. Additionally, fenugreek promotes thinner mucus, which is important for flushing out toxins from the sinus cavity. Thyme is also known for it’s role in supporting the respiratory system, particularly in the throat and bronchial region. Thyme also supports the immune system, making it a perfect pairing with fenugreek in fighting respiratory disease.

Nettle

Nettle (also called Stinging Nettles) has been used for hundreds of years to deal with allergy symptoms, particularly hayfever- the most frequent allergy problem. Nettle is able to reduce inflammation through biologically active compounds that it contains. Dr. Andrew Wiel M.D. author of Natural Health/ Natural Medicine has said he doesn’t know of anything more effective that nettle for relieving allergies.

Antihistamines, decongestants, allergy shots as well as prescription drugs like Claritin and Allegra treat just the symptoms of allergies and often lose effectiveness over time. They also cause negative and bothersome side effects such as: dry sinuses, drowsiness, insomnia, and high blood pressure. Nettle does not cause a single of these unwanted effects. It may be taken on a regular basis and contains an impressive variety of other health benefits.

One preliminary human study indicated that nettle capsules helped reduce itching and sneezing in people who have hay fever. In another study, 57% of patients rated nettle as effective in relieving allergies, and 48% said that nettles were more effective than allergy medications they had used previously. Researchers believe that might be due to its capability in decreasing the quantity of histamine the body generates in response to allergies.

All of these herbs can be found in capsule or tea form, and should be taken according to their respective instructions to help with your allergies. To soothe a sore throat, mullein and fenugreek & thyme capsules can be made into delightful teas by opening up a capsule of either and pouring out the powdered contents into a cup of hot water. Just make sure to leave the capsule out of the water for this natural remedy. A dab of honey can be added for a bit of sweetness, but both make great herbal teas without any sweetener.
